What’s in My Bag: Summer Essentials for Family Days Out

Let’s be honest – us mums are basically the unsung heroes of any family day out. While the kids are buzzing with excitement and the other half is “just grabbing the chairs”, we’re the ones making sure everything is packed for a fun, stress-free and safe day in the sun. Because when the sun finally shines here in the UK, we all want to make the most of it – and there’s no time for forgetting the essentials!

So, if you’re planning a beach trip, picnic in the park or a day at your local splash pad, here’s my trusty checklist of summer must-haves that I always pack in my bag…

The Essentials I Never Leave Without

1. Sun Cream – Factor 30+ at least!
The UK sun may not feel tropical, but it can still burn! I always go for a family-sized bottle with high UVA and UVB protection. Don’t forget to reapply throughout the day, especially after swimming or sweating.

2. Sun Hats & Sunglasses
Every family member gets a hat – even the ones who “don’t like wearing them”. Sun safety first, fashion second! And sunglasses help keep little eyes (and ours!) protected from harmful rays.

3. Water Bottles – Some Frozen, Some Not
This little hack is a game changer. I pack a few bottles as they are, and then freeze some the night before. Not only do they double as cool packs in your cool bag, but as they melt throughout the day, you’ll be treated to ice-cold drinks hours later. Genius, right?

4. First Aid Basics
I don’t lug a whole medical cabinet around, just a small zip-up pouch with plasters, antiseptic wipes, sting cream and some paracetamol. Most busy beaches and public areas have trained lifeguards or first aiders anyway, but it’s handy to have the basics.

5. Snacks & Lunch in a Cool Bag
I try to pack things that won’t spoil quickly – think sandwiches, fruit, crackers and those mini cheese snacks. Try to avoid things that are going to melt like chocolate or things that will spoil if left out. The frozen water bottles keep everything chilled, and it saves a fortune on pricey beachside food! Of course, there is always room for an ice cream though... 99 with a flake anyone?

6. Flip Flops or Sliders
Nothing worse than trying to wrestle socks onto sandy feet. Flip flops make the dash to the loo, ice cream van or sea so much easier (and no one ends up crying because their feet are “itchy and weird”).

7. Loose Change
Yes, it’s 2025, but small change is still king when it comes to some beachside toilets and parking machines. I always keep a little stash of 10ps and 20ps – trust me, you’ll thank yourself.

8. Towels – But Make Them Microfibre
Microfibre towels are the holy grail. They fold down tiny, dry in no time, and don’t seem to hoard sand like traditional towels do. Each person gets one, and it takes up half the space in the bag!

Handy Extras (Not Essentials, But Oh-So-Useful!)

Some things don’t make the essentials list, but they do make the day even smoother if you’ve got the space…

  • A Lightweight Cover-Up: Perfect for when you need to give your shoulders a break from the sun or for staying warm if you're still out into the evening.

  • Beach Toys & Inflatables: Buckets, spades, a ball or even a lilo – bring them from home if you can. Buying them at the beach usually costs a bomb. And don’t forget the pump! No one wants to manually inflate a unicorn ring.

A Good Book or Bluetooth Speaker: While the kids play, you might even get a few peaceful moments to relax. Whether you fancy some tunes or a couple of chapters, having a bit of ‘mum time’ makes the day feel like a treat for you too.

Whatever kind of adventure you're heading out on this summer, having a well-packed bag makes all the difference. We mums might carry half the house with us, but it means the day can be fun, safe and full of memories – without a last-minute dash to the overpriced beach shop.

What are your summer essentials? Have I missed any of your go-to favourites? Let me know in the comments!
